Despite Loss, Chew's 31 Puts Fear into Jessup
ROCKLIN, Calif. – Week in and week out, the San Diego Christian College men's basketball team has proven that they can compete with the best the NAIA has to offer. After defeating the #24 ranked Menlo College Oaks on Thursday, the Hawks put a scare into the Jessup University Warriors Saturday afternoon but ultimately fell 78-92.
The Hawks got off to a slow start allowing the Warriors to post 10 unanswered points following the opening tip. SDCC senior forward, Greg Chew finally answered three minutes in with a jumper and San Diego Christian began to battle back. After Cameron Dashiell's three-pointer was answered by Jessup, Josh O'Campo was fouled attempting a three. The junior guard drained all three of his free throws, sparking a 12-0 run for the Hawks over the next five minutes of play. Led by the scoring of Dashiell (14 first-half points), San Diego Christian would head to the locker room with both the momentum and a 38-33 lead.
The second half began slowly on offense for both teams, but Jessup began to chip away at the Hawk advantage and after six and a half minutes, the game was knotted at 45 apiece. A 6-0 Warrior run would follow putting the hosts out in front for good. The Hawks would battle to the end and despite the best efforts of leading scorer, Greg Chew, who single-handedly scored 23 points over the final 11 minutes of play, it was not to be SDCC's night. Chew would finish the game with 31 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 block and 1 steal to arguably be considered the player of the game.
