Hawks Stun Westmont 2-1 in Epic Comeback

TEMECULA, Calif. – For the first time since 2013, the San Diego Christian College Hawks men's soccer team has defeated the Westmont College Warriors. The 2-1 come-from-behind victory in the final home match of the season sent the Hawk seniors off with one of the greatest achievements in program history.

The Hawks came out firing after the opening whistle, creating two opportunities in the opening 10 minutes. The teams continued to exchange offensive salvos until midway through the first half, Westmont broke through. The opening goal would come from a Warriors set piece, following an SDCC foul, near the edge of the penalty area. The score would remain 0-1 in favor of Westmont at the half.

A series of shot exchanges by both teams would usher in the second half. From there, Westmont would make a number of substitutions, presumably to take a more defensive posture. Just over three minutes after the subs entered, San Diego Christian would pull level with the Warriors.

Junior, Andrija Mihajlovic, would push the ball forward for the Hawks and find the feet of senior, James William. William's hard shot would beat the Westmont keeper and put his team right back into the game.

Still fired up from the goal, the Hawks continued to press to find a game-winner. Almost as fast as the ball was put back in play, San Diego Christian would grab the lead. After stealing an errant Westmont pass, William would play in freshman Arie Boersma. Boersma would send his team into an excited frenzy when his shot found the back of the Westmont net to go up 2-1.

With thirty minutes still left to play, there was much to do. The San Diego Christian College defense was equal to the challenge thwarting eight Warrior shots. San Diego Christian rookie goalkeeper, Mark Cardenas, kept his team in the thick of it, producing 5 saves on the day.

Post-match, the team honored four graduating seniors who have been instrumental in the Hawk men's soccer program turnaround, Francois Ekyoci, Nick Goehler, Antonio Collado, and Kieran Chance.
