Hawks Take Jessup Down to the Wire
ROCKLIN, Calif. – Dealing with limited resources due to injury, the San Diego Christian College Hawks women's basketball team still managed to make Saturday's GSAC game against the William Jessup Warriors a competitive affair. The game would feature 2 ties and 9 lead changes. The Hawks would eventually fall to the Warriors by a score of 59-70, but not before making the home team sweat it down to the final seconds.
Mamaeia Makoni got the Hawks off to a flying start, draining a three-pointer on the team's first possession. Brianna Humphries would then steal the ball on the ensuing defensive play and be fouled on the break-away shot attempt. Humphries made one of her free throws and followed with a made jumper after a WJU miss, which put SDCC out 6-0, scoring on each of their first three possessions.
The Warriors would regroup, and the back-and-forth battle was on. The two teams continued to exchange the lead for much of the first and second periods. Makoni's third trey of the half came with close to five minutes left giving SDCC a 27-26 advantage. Unfortunately for the Hawks, the Warriors would close out the remainder of the half with a 12-2 run to give them a 28-29 lead.
The Hawks would emerge from the locker room swinging. Humphries and Jamee Joseph completed successful layups to cut the Hawk deficit to five. The gap would remain similar over the next five minutes, but the hot-shooting Makoni would get SDCC to within 2 points, draining yet another three-pointer. The Warriors would answer with a three of their own, but Makoni, Joseph, Humphries, and Maxine Tennant, who scored her first point since being added to the roster last week, would continue to find the basket to keep the margin at one. Over the final two minutes, the Hawks would lose ground but only find themselves down by 4 points heading into the last period.
San Diego Christian continued to battle, and after Brianna Humphries drained a three with 49 seconds left, they found themselves down by only three (59-62). Jessup would answer with another three and with the Hawks forced to foul, the Jessup shooters converted multiple times to take the win.
