Hawks Make Dramatic Comeback to Draw With Westcliff
SANTEE, Calif – The San Diego Christian College women's soccer team showed tremendous character coming back from a two-goal second-half deficit to draw 2-2 with the visiting Westcliff University Warriors on Wednesday afternoon. The tie moves SDCC's overall record to 3-2-3 ahead of their conference opener against Vanguard University on Saturday.
The Warriors had most of the offensive pressure in the early stages of the game. After forcing Hawks keeper, Kassandra Ramirez to make two saves in the opening three and a half minutes, Westcliff was awarded a penalty kick in the 6th minute. A spectacular diving save by Ramirez would thwart the shot and keep the match scoreless. San Diego Christian would settle in after the save, but Westcliff would continue to have most of the possession and offensive opportunities in the first half. The Warriors would go into the break outshooting the Hawks 7-1.
The second half would begin unfavorably for the Hawks. Within the first five minutes if play, San Diego Christian would find themselves down by two goals after the Warriors scored on their first two shots. Undeterred and, San Diego Christian would emerge from the second goal with a different mindset and flip the script on Westcliff. The Hawks would take control of the ball and in the 63rd minute, their pressure would be rewarded. SDCC's freshman midfielder Adriana Resendiz would steal the ball from Westcliff at midfield and play a ball to Ashley Galvan. Galvan would beat the Warrior keeper, who was well off her line and coolly placed the ball into the back of the net.
The Hawks would continue to be the more likely to score, flipping the first half script by outshooting the Warriors 7-1 the rest of the way. Once again, the pressure paid dividends. In the 89th minute, Brianna Figueroa would take the ball down the right sideline, drive toward the goal, and lay a pass across the top of the goal box to a waiting Layla Flores. Flores would one-time the pass driving the ball past the Westcliff keeper to even the match at two apiece and earn the point for SDCC.
