Coronado and Edwards Score in Victory Over (RV) OUAZ

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Two first-half goals lifted the San Diego Christian College Hawks women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over the host (RV) Ottawa University – Arizona Spirit Thursday evening. The victory was the first in conference play for SDCC on the season, moving their overall record to 4-4-4 and 1-2-1 in the GSAC.

The Hawk offense came out blazing in the opening minutes of the match. San Diego Christian's pressure yielded four unanswered shots in the opening ten minutes of play and set the tone for the match. SDCC's Adriana Resendiz was the first to put the Spirit defense on their heels. Her first-minute header from a Hawk corner kick caused a frantic OUAZ save. Brianna Figueroa was next to force Ottawa to protect their net followed by Aline Wilson who tested the keeper on back-to-back opportunities.

In the 24th minute, the San Diego Christian College pressure finally paid dividends. Junior forward, Ashlyn Edwards, who has had an amazing 2022 campaign thus far, played a ball through to the waiting Isabella Coronado. The junior midfielder would open her season scoring account, striking a shot from the top of the box that hit the inside far post, followed by the back of the net.

Edwards would get one herself, adding to the Hawk lead, five minutes later. Following an OUAZ foul in the Hawk offensive third, SDCC's leading scorer would bag her tenth goal of the season by placing a direct free kick into the goal from 23 yards out.

After the halftime break, OUAZ would do its best to try to get back into the game. Just as the Hawks led in shots and opportunities in the first half, the Spirit would lead in offensive attempts in the second. The difference in the match, however, was the play of San Diego Christian's keeper, Kassandra Ramirez, and the rest of the Hawk defense. Ramirez would stand firm in the net, turning away every shot the Spirit could muster to earn the clean sheet.
